Healthy Salad DressingsThe first visual that usually strikes after making a weight loss resolution is eating salad.

Theoretically, salads are just vegetables — low cal, high fiber, waist-line friendly, can’t go wrong. Right? But in reality, in an innocent attempt to add some life to a meal of tasteless roughage, a lot of us wind up drenching our plates in thick, flavourful, not-so-healthy salad dressing.

Most store-bought and restaurant salad dressings are loaded with un healthy ingredients such as fat, sugar, salt and preservatives. Even a low-fat dressing can do you wrong, often filled with sugar to compensate for the lack of fat. Salad dressings can add calories and un healthy ingredients into what started out as a low calorie, healthy meal selection. The pairing of such a good-for-you dish with such a high calorie diet detonator is almost tragic.

But not all salad dressings are created equal. Tasty, cheap and healthy salad dressings are right at your fingertips – in your own home. By creating salad dressings at home, you are able to control what goes in, and what does not (keeping out un healthy ingredients and preservatives).

Using natural, healthy ingredients can boost the nutritional benefits of your meal as well as the flavor. It can also be cheaper than buying bottles from the store. Save time and money by making big batches of salad dressing in one shot, and then store it in re-usable glass bottles in the fridge to be used when you please.

The trick is to learn a handful of recipes for a few different salad dressing bases. Then you can easily switch things up with all sorts of fresh, unique and tasty twists, simply by swapping in some alternative mainstay ingredients like spices, herbs, citrus, and healthy oils.

Your taste buds, waistline and bank account will all appreciate the switch to healthy, home-made salad dressings. Enjoy!
